Tanguar Haor & Birisiri in Bangladesh

Tanguar Haor, located in the Dharmapasha and Tahirpur upazilas of Sunamganj District, is one of Bangladesh’s most remarkable and ecologically vital wetland ecosystems. Spanning around 100 square kilometers, including 46 villages, this unique wetland supports the livelihood of more than 40,000 people.

In recognition of its ecological significance and vulnerability due to the overexploitation of natural resources, the Government of Bangladesh declared Tanguar Haor an Ecologically Critical Area (ECA) in 1999. A year later, it was designated a Ramsar Site, acknowledging it as a wetland of international importance.

Tanguar Haor plays a crucial role in the country’s biodiversity and fisheries. Known as a “mother fishery”, it nurtures more than 140 species of freshwater fish, including ayir, gang magur, baim, tara, gutum, gulsha, tengra, titna, garia, beti, and kakia. In the 1999–2000 fiscal year alone, the government generated over 7 million BDT in fisheries revenue from this haor.

Every winter, the haor transforms into a sanctuary for over 200 species of migratory birds, creating a spectacular display of biodiversity that attracts nature lovers, bird watchers, and photographers alike.

The wetland also supports rich aquatic vegetation and plant biodiversity, including:

• Trees & Shrubs: Hizol (Barringtonia acutangula), Pongamia pinnata, Rosa clinophylla
• Aquatic Plants: Nelumbo nucifera (lotus), Euryale ferox, Ottelia alismoides
• Wetland Flora: Crataeva nurvala, Typha species, Nalkhagra, Ban tulsi, and Balua

Dhaka to sylhet by train/Bus ( 7 hour) . then by Private Car to Tahirpur ( 3 Hour ) . overnight stay hotel in Tahirpur .

Day 2

After breakfast at 8 am , Boat trip at TanguarHaor ( 4/5 hour) Visit Lake , Indian Border area , island market & small villages .overnight stay hotel in tahirpur .

Day 3
